July 21 2012 picnic launch report

On the afternoon of Saturday, July 21th, MASA held a launch at the VFW soccer fields near Elk River in concert with the annual MASA picnic. 

The weather was hot and partly cloudy.  The breeze was pretty much nonexistent, and nearly all recoveries were on the field.  The launch ran from 3pm until 5pm.

Alan Estenson brought and set up a 4-position "community pad" system.  The Stenbergs set up their own launch system nearby and got in some practice contest flights.

A very nice afternoon for launching rockets because there was ample shade and lots of cool liquid refreshments between flights.

I only put up three flights this afternoon. The first was my brand-spanking new Kit-bash Kontest entry - the knock off Laser-X on a B6-4. Nice flight straight up, turned over and the ejection occurred perfectly. However the brand new parachute stayed tightly packed and did not blossom. Still, the descent was slowed enough that there was no damage to the rocket.

Next up was an old Estes kit that I simplified into a 4 Fin and a Nose Cone rocket that's painted blue on a C6-5 for an absolutely straight up flight and my shortest walk for a recovery at about 30 to 35 yards.

Last up was my old standy-by, the Satellite Launcher on a D12-5. Another nice high and straight flight followed by another short walk for recovery at about 50 yards.

That's it - short and sweet.

At least two folks had a very nice potential entries for PRANG of the year at the Holiday Party later this year. Somebody that caught the incidentals will have to nominate them.
All in all, a very nice picnic indeed!

 I too flew my Kitbash Kontest entry at the picnic to earn the requisite bonus 1800 points. When I first started the project I had a hard time trying to find a rocket in the 72 catalog that I wanted to try to build from the Force 5 kit, but then I noticed one of the kids that showed up in a few pictures. He was the typical 1972 nerd: thick glasses, button up shirt and plaid pants. So I based my rocket on him, using the Force 5 pods as his arms, painting plaid pants, and using the art card from the kit to produce details like his belt, shirt and even the thick glasses. I RockSimmed a close representation of it and the results indicated that a C6-3 would be the best motor with an altitude of 400', which based on the actual flight was the perfect choice.

I also flew my newly finished Semroc Goblin while drag-racing my daughter Alyssa's new square NewWay Quad Goblin and Ted Meissner's Quad Goblin - all three on D12-5's.

Alyssa also flew my Honest Goon, and then we drag-raced a few Mini Marz Landers on A10-3T mini motors.

I went mostly "retro" for my picnic flights.

2012 marks my 30th anniversary in model rocketry. I still have the very first rocket that I ever built - an Estes "Der Big Red Max". Except for the shock cord, it's all original. I flew it at the picnic on a C6-5 for a great flight.

The first rocket that I ever launched, 30 years ago this month, was an Estes "Kadet". I still have it, but it's not airworthy any more. However, I did launch a "Kadet Klone" replica on a B4-4 at the picnic.

I also flew a rocket that I built as a 4-H project 29 years ago - an Estes "Nebulon Warrior". I'm not sure if I had ever flown this rocket before; it didn't have any obvious signs of it. It's in original condition except for the shock cord and parachute shroud lines. It flew great on a B6-4. One fin came loose on landing, so it'll need a little glue before going back on the shelf.

For other flights, I flew my "MASA SPEV Saucer" on a C6-0, a lengthened salvaged "Tall Rascal" on a C6-5, and my old scratchbuilt triple-ring-tail "Razzle Dazzle" on a D12-5.
