Rocket Launching

UPDATE - Because of the heat, the rocket launch will NOT be held.  The picnic will go on as planned!

The range WILL be under RSO / LCO control at all times!  The launch range will open at 3pm and shut down at 5pm sharp.  NO LAUNCHES WILL BE PERMITTED AFTER 5PM.  (Water rockets and air-powered foam "stomp" rockets will be permitted after 5pm.)

This will be an official MASA club launch.  The launch range will be open from 3pm until 5pm.  Flight cards will be used to record all launches.  If there is not a RSO/LCO volunteer for a duty shift, the range will be shut down until a RSO/LCO comes on duty.

Please note that the following limits will be enforced for the picnic launch.

  • Maximum rocket lift-off weight of 16 ounces.

  • Maximum motor size of "E".  (May be limited by the RSO to smaller motors depending upon wind speed and direction.)

  • Clusters allowed only at the discretion of RSO.

  • Multi-stage flights allowed only at the discretion of RSO.

YOU MUST BRING YOUR OWN LAUNCH PAD & CONTROLLER (GROUND SUPPORT EQUIPMENT) or arrange in advance to share with someone else.  (We will NOT be setting up any "community pads".)  We will lay out a range area using a "misfire alley" configuration.  The Launch Wrangler will direct you on where to set up your equipment on this range.  You will use your own launch equipment and push your own launch button, but you will do so under the direction of an LCO/RSO.  We will provide cellulose wadding and flight cards.

If you have any questions about this setup, please ask them now!

In the case of extreme heat or high winds, the rocket launch portion of the picnic will be canceled.  The picnic part of the picnic will still be held.

Qubit Build-It Fly-It Race!

Open to contestants of all ages! Build and fly a Qubit in as short a time as possible.

All contestants will gather at the starting line (around 5:30pm). Each one will be given a special cardstock Qubit.

At GO, they will all race from the starting line to the assembly area.  They each then have to cut-out, fold, assemble, and glue together their own Qubit.

They then run from the assembly area to the launching area. They have to prep their Qubit for flight, launch it successfully, and recover it. (It must survive the flight intact or else be disqualified.)

They then run from the launching area to the finish line. First to successfully complete the race wins! Prizes and bragging rights for the adult & youth winners!

Building tools and glues will be provided (although you're welcome to bring your own too.) CA (super glue) will not be provided, but you're welcome to bring your own. Motors and launch equipment will be provided.
